Swedish Furniture Maker IKEA and Tencent’s [0700:HK] WeChat announced that the mini-app IKEA Pop up Store will be launched on August 27. IKEA will offer limited furniture sets with different themes on the app. With the help of the mini-app’s social communication attributes, the app will let more customers learn about and purchase the products. In addition, IKEA also said that in the future, it will join hands with WeChat to launch more innovative experiences for the app, including online and offline event reservations, online classes, and “virtual shopping bags”.
Tencent and its messaging app WeChat have increasingly collaborated with a number of retailers, aiming at expanding its new retail presence. Not long ago in May, French retailer Carrefour SA [CA:FP] and its partner Tencent [0700:HK] launched their first smart store “Le Marche” in Shanghai, according to Yicai on May 20. Apart from WeChat Pay, Tencent also provides the smart store with QR shopping service and facial recognition technology. Also, in February, Tencent and JD.com [JD:US] invested USD140m and USD117m, respectively in a Chinese retail chain called Better Life Commercial Chain Share [002251:CH].
